OPTICAL SOFTWARE APPLICATION ASSISTANT (Part-Time, Paid Intern Position)

Occupational Summary

The Optical Software Application Assistant interfaces with different teams in the company, including the technical customer service team, the sales/marking team, and the software development team. He/she will aid in the following activities:

  • Acquire and analyze customer needs and problems, make recommendations to the software team to develop solutions
  • Generate ideas for software products that innovate and fill gaps in the current market
  • Assist in software testing
  • Assist in technical support to customers regarding use of the software, installation and maintenance questions; create technical white papers and case studies; improve user manuals
  • Interface with Sales and Marketing to provide technical expertise in content creation

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write White Papers regarding use of the software; improve user manuals
  • Create general and technical content for the web site
  • Research as needed on specific topics to assist new feature development in response to customer requests
  • Technical support to assist customers with the software application
  • Develop video content that demonstrates using the software to solve optic problems

Core knowledge/skills/abilities:

  • Knowledge of optical design, physics, software coding, or other relevant engineering or software development
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary teams
  • Detail-oriented
  • Excellent mathematical/analytical skills
  • Experience/Interest/Aptitude in customer service, software development, and project management a plus

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Optical Science, Physics or other similar engineering discipline from a four-year college or university is preferred, or at a minimum senior year level.  Good opportunity for first year in Master’s degree or Ph.D. programs.
  • Knowledge of optical design software is required; however, training on our proprietary software will be provided on the job.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals
  • Respond professionally to inquiries and/or concerns from customers
  • Write technical white paper and case study presentations
  • Effectively present technical information to customers, other employees and the management team

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts

REASONING ABILITIES

  • Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Deal accurately with non-verbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.)
  • Deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables

OTHER EXPERIENCE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Ability to work with other technical & non-technical individuals in a professional and courteous manner
  • Ability to track and communicate progress on customer projects
  • Ability to work with changing priorities and support customer’s needs
  • A willingness to learn and be mentored by Optical engineering experts
  • Experience with CAD software helpful

 

This position is part-time, hourly, non-exempt, and non-supervisory.
